Laminates are special thin plates made of different materials that are placed on the teeth to correct their appearance. They are most often made and placed in pairs, so that the symmetrically arranged teeth do not differ from each other. When the smile is completely reconstructed, ten laminates are placed on the upper and lower rows of teeth. Unlike crowning, when laminate is used, it does not surround the whole tooth, only the anterior part of the tooth and, if necessary, the upper part of the tooth if there is an aesthetic need (slight curvature, stiffness, crack, fragment).
When laminates are used
Tooth color correction. It is no secret that tooth enamel can only be whitened to a certain extent and its extent varies from person to person, so some people can achieve a snow-white smile, but another smile remains "yellow". In addition, the effect of whitening depends on a person's eating habits, the regular coffee consumer should not rely on the long-term effects of whitening. However, laminates offer the opportunity to effectively and permanently change the color of teeth and maintain this tone.
Teeth restoration. With laminates, it is possible to quickly restore the edge of the front teeth and, if necessary, correct its shape.
Hiding cracks and splinters. Laminates completely cover the front of the tooth and therefore also hide any cracks and fragments that may occur in the enamel.
Tooth shape and size correction. Thin overlays can be used to adjust the shape and size of the teeth, making them more aesthetically pleasing.
Loss of teeth. By laying laminates, it is possible to change the distance between the teeth without other more serious effects.
Material used in laminates
Aggregate or light composite material. As you can see, laminates of this type are made of the same material used to fill cavities. Such laminates can be pre-prepared in the laboratory or installed during a patient visit. These are the technologically simplest and cheapest laminates, but their service life is not very long, they last up to five years. In addition, it is difficult to achieve an aesthetically pleasing result with such laminates.
Extruded and un-pressed ceramics. Laminates of porcelain or ceramic, whether pressed or heated. Such laminates are characterized by an aesthetically pleasing appearance and strength.
Zirconium dioxide. This material is stronger than the previous ones, therefore the service life of zirconium laminates, if properly manufactured and installed, is 15 years and even more.
Advantages and disadvantages of laminates
Regardless of the materials used in production, there are several advantages to using laminates:
• protection against caries and tooth decay
• ease of cleaning teeth
• hiding tooth defects
• Ceramic and zirconium laminates have additional advantages:
• aesthetic beauty (due to the production material, laminates do not look different from ordinary teeth)
• long service life
• They do not darken over time.
There are two disadvantages associated with the use of ceramic and zirconium laminates: the relatively high cost and the need to completely replace the laminate in the event of a crack or crack in the laminate. Laminates made of aggregate do not have such defects, but they look worse, have a much shorter service life and become darker in color over time.
There are several contraindications to the use of laminates. If the laminates cannot be securely fastened so that they do not fall off over time, there are serious defects in the closing of the mouth. Bruxism is the crunching of teeth that occurs most often in sleep, but it is also possible that the disease also shows signs of daytime. Defects in the hard tissue of the teeth preclude the possibility of attachment to the tooth. Temporary contraindications include. Poor oral hygiene, periodontal disease and low dental crowns.
Laminates
Laminates made of composite material are placed directly in the dentist's chair and are compatible with caries treatment (which is obvious because the material used is the same). The time taken to apply the laminates depends on the clinical situation and the competence of the doctor, because (not in all cases) the process looks like this: preparation, then laying of the laminates (possibly in several layers), sanding.
When using ceramic and zirconium laminates, the procedure looks like this: preparing the teeth, casting the mold, making the laminates with a 3D printer, installing them. The laminates themselves are very thin (on average about 0.5-0.6 mm), so the teeth must be rotated minimally and in some cases not at all.
In our own clinic, we manufacture laminates from high-quality Japanese material (zirconia) so that our patients can achieve a Hollywood smile in 2 days.
After placing the laminates, no special professional or domestic hygiene requirements are required for the laminates. The dentists' recommendations are the same for all patients - do not bite nuts with your teeth, do not open beers with your teeth, do not bite things that should not be bitten and do not forget to brush your teeth twice a day.
The article can be summed up with the recommendation that laminates are a great solution for improving the appearance of your teeth and thus improving your quality of life.
